Honoring Dr. King

Dear Friend,

Today, we celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. A civil rights trailblazer, Dr. King’s commitment to service and unity had a tremendous impact on our country and his legacy remains strong to this day. When I was a young boy, my mother taught my sister and I the Golden Rule – treat others the way you want to be treated. Dr. King embodied this principle as he sought to bring us together – no matter our race, ethnicity, gender, religion, or political party – for the greater good of our nation.

Dr. King’s call to action to unify our nation is part of what inspired my own commitment to serving others. On one of my first trips to Washington, D.C., I attended a House of Representatives hearing on the Voting Rights Act, a monumental piece of legislation that would not have been possible without Dr. King and his leadership. It was in that moment that I knew I wanted to work in the halls of Congress in service of my community and many of the same goals as Dr. King.

While our country faces many new and unprecedented threats to our democracy, we must stand up for the rights that those before us worked so hard to attain. Today, I will travel up and down our state to join fellow Delawareans in solidarity of these beliefs and principles. At events with the Delaware Bar Association in Wilmington, the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Zeta Rho Lambda Chapter, and the Inner-City Cultural League in Dover, we will celebrate Dr. King’s life and contributions to the civil rights movement in Delaware and across the country.

One of my favorite Dr. King quotes is: “Everybody can be great because everybody can serve.” Today, and every day, let us all honor his legacy and find time to give back to our communities, embrace the Golden Rule, and remember the lessons Dr. King continues to teach us.

God bless,

Tom Carper
