Carper Applauds Confirmation of Customs and Border Protection Commissioner

Carper has called to confirm nominee for position that has been held vacant for over two years

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Tom Carper (D-Del.) today spoke on the Senate floor urging his colleagues to support the nomination of Chris Magnus, the current Tucson Police Chief, to be Commissioner of U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) at the Department of Homeland Security. Following Senator Carper’s speech, Chief Magnus was confirmed by the full Senate. 

“I always like to say that leadership is the most important ingredient for success. For an organization to succeed in achieving its mission, dedicated leadership is absolutely critical. Chief Magnus has over forty years of exemplary public service in communities that span across the United States,” Carper said. “The American people are counting on seasoned leadership at the agency, and I have no doubt that Chief Magnus’ track record of collaborative leadership and public service will serve the Department well.”

President Biden nominated Chief Magnus on April 12, 2021. The position of Commissioner of CBP has been vacant since April of 2019. CBP is one of the world’s largest law enforcement organizations, with more than 60,000 employees and a budget of over $15 billion.
