Carper Meets with President-elect Biden’s Nominee to Lead EPA
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Tom Carper (D-Del.) released the following statement after meeting with Michael Regan, President-elect Joe Biden’s nominee to lead the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Senator Carper’s statement on the announcement of Regan’s nomination can be found here.
“Meeting with Michael Regan today was a welcome reminder of the promise and potential before us to rebuild a better future for this country. We need an EPA Administrator who will be guided by science in working to undo the damage done to our environment by the outgoing administration and ushering in a new era of climate action. After the last four years, we also need a leader who will work to heal the erosion of public trust in our nation’s leading environmental agency while restoring employee morale within the agency. Taking the helm of EPA would be a monumental task under the best of circumstances, but it’s hard to imagine a more difficult moment than right now. It will take a tremendous amount of hard work, vision and heart to rebuild this agency.
“The more I get to know Secretary Regan, the more confident I am that he is up to the task and ready to lead. His reputation as the head of the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality is one of a consensus builder. That will be critical as he engages with Congress, states, the environmental community and business community in mobilizing the agency to address the climate crisis. I believe he will be a strong partner as we work to prioritize environmental justice and fulfill the promise of clean air, safe drinking water and healthy communities free of pollution for every American. I look forward to swiftly bringing his nomination before the Environment and Public Works Committee.”
