Carper on the Passing of Congressman John Lewis
WILMINGTON, Del. – Today, U.S. Senator Tom Carper (D-Del.) released the following statement on the passing of Congressman John Lewis:
“What a joy it was to serve with John Lewis in the House many years ago — to be inspired by his courage, to see his humility up close and to call him my friend. John Lewis didn’t just tell us to never give up, to never give in, to always keep the faith or to do what is right even when it’s hard. He showed us how through his extraordinary life. How lucky we all are that we had the privilege to learn from him and witness the example he set for so many years.
“More than most, John dedicated his life to the hard work that we are each called to do — to form a ‘more perfect Union.’ And he never relented, even in the face of unimaginable obstacles. May his legacy be a lesson for each and every one of us, and may we honor him by continuing his fight for justice and true equality. There’s work still to be done. Let’s all do it with the perseverance and love that John always showed us.”
