Carper Statement on Republican Tax Reform Update
WASHINGTON—U.S. Senator Tom Carper, a member of the Senate Finance Committee, released the following statement on the Republican announcement on tax reform.
“The United States needs a tax code that will help our country out-innovate and out-compete every nation in the globe and, frankly, that’s not the tax system we have right now. Both the corporate and the individual tax codes need an overhaul. However, the tax plan proposed by the Trump Administration would add trillions of dollars to the federal debt to pay for tax giveaways to the wealthiest people in this country. That’s the last thing this country needs and even calling it ‘reform’ is a joke.
“In real time, Americans are seeing that a partisan and secretive approach to passing comprehensive reform legislation just doesn’t work. The Finance Committee has yet to hold bipartisan member meetings on tax reform. My Democratic colleagues and I have not been able to provide real input in the process or substance of a tax reform plan. If we truly want to move the needle on this important issue, I urge the administration and congressional leaders to start a substantive conversation that gives every member of the Finance committee, as well as stakeholders, a seat at the table.”
