Carper Statement on Appointment of Special Counsel to Head Russia Investigation
WASHINGTON – Today, U.S. Senator Tom Carper (D-Del.), a senior member of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, released the following statement after the Department of Justice (DOJ) appointed former Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Director Robert S. Mueller to serve as special counsel for the Russia investigation.
“I am very encouraged by the news that former FBI Director Mueller will serve as special counsel to oversee the DOJ’s investigation into Russia’s meddling in our 2016 elections. With this appointment, Deputy Attorney General Rosenstein has taken a tremendous step toward giving the American people the truth they deserve.
“I’ve known Director Mueller personally for years, and I believe he is guided by very strong core values. Throughout his career at both the FBI and the DOJ, he has committed himself to doing what is right, not what may be easy or expedient. Moreover, his work ethic is matched by his commitment to finding the truth. Director Mueller was held in high regard when President Bush appointed him to lead the FBI, and his reputation was only enhanced by the way he carried out that critical duty. I believe Director Mueller is the right choice for this job, and I have confidence he will do it well.”
