Senator Carper Statement on Trump asking U.S. Attorneys to Resign

WILMINGTON, Del. – Today, U.S. Senator Tom Carper (D-Del.) issued this statement following the Trump Administration’s request for 46 U.S. Attorneys across the country to resign, including Delaware’s U.S. Attorney Charles M. Oberly III:

“It is not unusual for a new presidential administration to replace U.S. Attorneys upon taking office, but the disorganized way President Trump has handled this process is troublesome. This has the potential to impede current investigations across the country. My hope is that the President can prudently and expeditiously fill these vacant positions so there is very little disruption to our nation’s justice system. 

“Charlie has done a fine job as U.S. Attorney for Delaware and has built a good team. He will leave this position with a strong legacy of public service, having served as Delaware’s Attorney General for 12 years, and later as the U.S. Attorney. Charlie has been a friend for a long, long time, and I even got to know his family when his daughter applied for a U.S. Service Academy nomination, and I was privileged to offer one to her.  I was proud to provide his name to President Obama for this post, and consider him a fine leader. Because of this leadership, I know his team will continue the important work his office has been doing on behalf of all Delawareans.”
