More than 250 people attend Senator Carper’s 16th Annual U.S. Service Academy Night

DOVER, Del. – On Wednesday, February 22, 2017, nearly 250 Delawareans attended U.S. Senator Tom Carper’s (D-Del.) 16th Annual U.S. Service Academy Information Night. Representatives from the service academies and other military organizations joined Senator Carper to answer questions and provide information to students and their families about the application process.

“The military had a tremendous impact on my life, and is where I started my career in public service,” said Senator Carper, a former Naval Flight Officer and retired U.S. Navy Captain. “Our nation’s service academies seek applicants who possess good moral character, a commendable academic record, medical and physical fitness, the desire to serve, and the motivation to lead. I’m proud to host this information night to help our students better prepare to apply to one of these prestigious institutions.”

Service academy applications require either a congressional nomination or a military-affiliated nomination. One of Senator Carper’s appointees for 2017 is Harrison Foley, a United States Naval Academy appointee who attends St. Andrew’s School and lives in Wilmington. Foley spoke to the students about the application process and what he did to be successful. Participants included the United States Naval Academy, the United States Air Force Academy, the United States Merchant Marine Academy, the United States Military Academy, the United States Coast Guard Academy and the Delaware National Guard, as well as Air Force, Army and Navy ROTC program representatives and the Delaware Civil Air Patrol.
