Chairman Carper Statement on White House Review of Federal Support for Local Law Enforcement Equipment Acquisition

WASHINGTON – Today, Sen. Tom Carper (D-Del.), Chairman of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, released the following statement in response to the White House Review: Federal Support for Local Law Enforcement Equipment Acquisition.

Chairman Carper: “The events that unfolded in Ferguson, Missouri  have sparked a much-needed national discussion on a range of issues. Among other things, Congress and the Administration began a much-needed examination of the federal government’s support of state and local law enforcement through surplus military equipment and grant funding for equipment, exercises and training. In September, I held a hearing alongside Senators Coburn and McCaskill to scrutinize federal programs that support state and local law enforcement. The White House’s review has resulted in key recommendations that could lead to improved accountability over the funds and equipment provided by the federal government to state and local police. These recommendations track a number of ideas discussed at our hearing. My colleagues and I in Congress must continue to work with the Administration to ensure that these programs have strong oversight and coordination.”
