Chairman Carper Statement on President’s Intent to Nominate Shaun Donovan as Director of the Office of Management and Budget
WASHINGTON – Today, U.S. Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee Chairman Tom Carper (D-Del.) released the following statement regarding President Obama’s intent to nominate Shaun Donovan to be the next Director of the Office of Management and Budget:
“I welcome the President’s nomination of Shaun Donovan to be the Director of the Office of Management and Budget. Given our nation’s financial challenges, it is critical that Congress and the Administration work together to get our fiscal house in order and continue to find ways to get better results for less money. The Office of Management and Budget plays a critical role in that effort and requires a leader that is a strong voice for federal efficiency and effective management.
“In her short time as Director of Office of Management and Budget, Sylvia Mathews Burwell did an exceptional job leading that critical agency. I had the pleasure of working closely with her and the team she put together and was deeply impressed with her leadership and management skills. She played an important role in the bipartisan budget deal reached this past December and she worked tirelessly to navigate our return from the unfortunate government shutdown we faced last October. There’s no doubt she leaves big shoes to fill at the agency.
“Meanwhile, Secretary Donovan has demonstrated skilled leadership in his current role as Secretary of the Department of Housing and Urban Development and in his past work. I’ve had a positive experience working with him in the past, and he is a trusted member of the President’s cabinet. I look forward to hearing how he plans to continue to implement the budget and management initiatives Sylvia Mathews Burwell spearheaded without missing a beat. I am pleased the President has done his part to quickly put forward a qualified nominee for this important position. Now, it is up to Congress to do our part and consider his nomination in a thorough and timely manner. In the coming days and weeks, I will continue to work with my colleagues to do just that.”
