Senator Carper Votes to Confirm Richard Cordray

Emphasizes importance of implementing Dodd-Frank 'fully and effectively'

WASHINGTON – Today, Sen. Tom Carper (D-Del.) released the following statement after the Senate voted to confirm Richard Cordray as the Director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB):

“For too long, the future leadership of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau has been in question. Thankfully, that uncertainty ended today when the Senate finally confirmed Richard Cordray as the bureau’s permanent director. This agency – the only one in the federal government tasked explicitly with protecting consumers from financial harm – is a vital piece of the landmark regulations put in place under Dodd-Frank to help prevent future economic crises. Rich will be an able partner for me, my colleagues and many other leaders within the executive branch to help implement Dodd-Frank fully and effectively. Additionally, we’ll continue to look for ways to strengthen and even improve the law for consumers and small businesses in Delaware and across the country.

“This vote also signifies a pivotal moment for the Senate. Too many of President Obama’s nominees for executive branch positions remain in limbo before the Senate. Leaving vacancies in critical positions throughout the federal government is no longer tenable. Hopefully, today’s vote is only a preview of more up-or-down votes to come on nominees for key posts. I look forward to working with my colleagues to continue to process executive branch nominees fairly and expeditiously.”
