Sen. Carper Encourages Delawareans to Nominate Local Heroes for Citizen Service Award

WASHINGTON – Today, Sen. Tom Carper (D-Del.) called attention to the approaching deadline for Delawareans to nominate local heroes for the Congressional Medal of Honor Foundation’s Citizen Service Before Self Honors award on February 10, 2012.

The Congressional Medal of Honor Society and Foundation are searching nationwide for citizen heroes for this national award, which recognizes and honors citizen heroes who have clearly demonstrated a willingness to sacrifice for others whether through a single act of extraordinary heroism at risk to one’s life or through a prolonged series of selfless acts. The nominee’s actions must epitomize the concept of “service before self” and must be performed “above and beyond” one’s professional area of responsibility or conduct.

“There is nothing more important in life than serving others, and this award gives us all an opportunity to recognize the true civilian heroes who exhibit selfless service every day,” said Sen. Carper. “I urge all Delawareans to nominate friends, family members, neighbors or colleagues who consistently sacrifice for the common good for this prestigious award.”

A panel, including Medal of Honor recipients, will consider all nominations and select 20 national finalists. From among those finalists, a second panel of Medal of Honor recipients will select three individuals to receive Citizen Service Before Self Honors at a ceremony on Friday, March 23, 2012, in conjunction with National Medal of Honor Day, to be held at Arlington Cemetery near the Tomb of the Unknowns.
