Sen. Carper Welcomes Launch of Performance.gov

WASHINGTON – Today, Sen. Tom Carper (D-Del.), Chairman of the Subcommittee on Federal Financial Management, welcomed the launch of Performance.gov, a new government website designed to give American citizens a view into the federal government’s efforts to cut waste, save money, and improve performance.

Performance.gov will focus on the federal government’s progress in such areas as: eliminating unneeded federal real estate; reducing improper payments; improving results in contract spending; achieving technology-driven productivity gains; improving agencies’ priority-setting and performance; and getting better customer service.

“The launch of Performance.gov takes us a step closer to our goal of creating a more transparent, efficient, and accountable government,” said Sen. Carper. “It is a common-sense solution that gives Americans the ability to monitor how their tax dollars are being spent and to stay informed on government operations, which will help keep the federal government accountable and on track.

“As Chairman of the Subcommittee on Federal Financial Management, I’ve held several hearings on the Obama administration’s efforts to prevent waste and fraud across government,” continued Sen. Carper. “Those hearings have also examined the lessons that can be learned from these efforts to encourage all federal agencies to be more transparent and effective when spending the scarce resources they’ve been entrusted with, such as by reducing improper payments and eliminating unneeded federal property. Today’s launch shows that the administration is serious about tracking performance goals, holding agencies accountable for their decisions, and stopping wasteful spending before it begins, all in an effort to produce better results for less money in the federal government. I look forward to working with the administration and my colleagues here in Congress to see what more needs to be done.”

Sen. Carper, together with Sens. Mark Warner (D-Va.) and Daniel Akaka (D-Hawaii), authored the Government Performance and Results Modernization Act of 2010, which called for the creation of the Performance.gov website. The legislation passed the Congress last session and was signed into law by President Obama earlier this year.
