Sen. Carper Commends Administration Plan to Review, Sell Unneeded Federal Properties

Action could save taxpayers billions

WASHINGTON – Today, Sen. Tom Carper (D-Del.), Chairman of the Senate Subcommittee on Federal Financial Management, released the following statement commending the Obama Administration’s plan to review, sell and divest of unused and unneeded federal properties – an action that could save taxpayers about $15 billion:

“Getting rid of the federal property we don’t need and better managing the property we have so we spend fewer taxpayer dollars is a no brainer, especially when we’re struggling to curb a massive federal deficit. I welcome the Administration’s leadership in this area and will introduce legislation in the coming weeks that will include this initiative as part of a comprehensive plan to save money by better managing federal property. I will also hold a hearing on this issue in June. We all know that getting rid of unnecessary federal property isn’t the silver bullet for our fiscal woes but $15 billion isn’t chump change either and we need to do everything in our power to be better stewards of taxpayer money.”

According to the Obama Administration, the federal government owns the most property in the nation, resulting in more than $20 billion in operational and maintenance costs every year. At least 12,000 of those structures are no longer needed.
