Sen. Carper’s Sussex County Schedule for Saturday, September 18, 2004

Georgetown, DE – Senator Tom Carper will spend Saturday, September 18, 2004, in Sussex County. The Senator will start off his day by taking part in the Alzheimer’s Association Memory Walk in Grove Park, Rehoboth Beach. Memory Walk is the nation’s premier fundraiser to help those battling Alzheimer’s disease. Since 1989, Memory Walk has raised more than $149 million for programs and services for individuals with Alzheimer’s, their families, and caregivers. Senator Carper will then volunteer in the 2004 Coastal Clean Up effort at the Indian River Life Saving Station. Recently, the Senator unveiled his proposal for a national park in Delaware—the only state without one. The Indian River Life Saving Station is an existing attraction to which a National Park interpretive center, envisioned in the Carper National Park proposal, would guide and direct visitors. There are over 50 sites in Delaware where the cleanup will take place. Last year, 1,135 volunteers using 794 trash bags, picked up 17,564 pounds of trash, including 11,982 cigarettes. More than 3,400 hours of volunteer time were devoted to cleaning and protecting Delaware’s coastline and wildlife. Delaware’s participation in Coastal Cleanup is part of an International Coastal Cleanup run by the Ocean Conservancy.
