Sen. Carper: HIRE Act Effective First Step In Creating Jobs
WASHINGTON – Sen. Tom Carper (D-Del.) issued the following statement today after the Senate passed the Hiring Incentives to Restore Employment (HIRE) Act by a vote of 70 to 28.
“Our nation’s economy has bottomed out, and is just beginning to bounce back. Now, our job in Congress is to provide a nurturing environment where businesses – especially small businesses – can begin to grow, expand and hire once again.
“Today’s passage of the HIRE Act is just the first element – a down payment – on an aggressive jobs agenda that Congress will pursue over the coming months.
“So many people in our country believe that Congress is deadlocked and ineffective, and they are frustrated because they sent us to Washington for results. Today, we showed that we can produce bipartisan results.
“This package doesn’t include just Democratic ideas, or just Republican ideas. Instead, it combines commonsense, practical solutions that will strengthen our economy, like a payroll tax holiday for hiring unemployed workers; money to put people to work in good-paying jobs building roads, highways and bridges; and incentives to encourage small businesses to make capital investments that will boost productivity and hiring.”
