Delaware’s Congressional Delegation Announces $8 Million for Coastline Repair in Rehoboth, Dewey Beaches; $6 Million for Fenwick Island
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Sens. Tom Carper and Ted Kaufman (both D-Del.) and Congressman Mike Castle (R-Del.) announced $8.33 million in federal funding to repair the Rehoboth Beach and Dewey Beach coastlines and $6.17 million in federal funding to repair the Fenwick Island coastline following damage from the Nor’Easter and Hurricane Ida in November 2009.
"We’re pleased to announce that Delaware’s coastline continues to receive the attention it deserves," said Carper, Kaufman, and Castle. "Delaware’s treasured beaches are essential to the state’s economy. Not only will this funding help repair the damage that was done, it will also allow us to reinforce coastal barriers to protect our beaches before the inevitable storm strikes again."
On August 16, Delaware’s Congressional delegation wrote to the Army Corps of Engineers to urge them to use the funding provided in the Emergency Supplemental Appropriations Act of 2010 to repair the Bethany Beach and South Bethany Beach coastlines and to repair the damage to Rehoboth Beach, Dewey Beach and Fenwick Island’s coastlines. A previous letter noted that for every $1 spent on beach nourishment, the federal government collects $320 in tax revenue.
