Delaware Senators Welcome $11.7 Million Award to Cleanup Former GM Plant
WASHINGTON – Today, Sens. Tom Carper and Ted Kaufman (both D-Del.) welcomed the announcement from the White House that Delaware will receive $11.7 million to help clean up and reuse the former General Motors Boxwood Road plant. The share is from a new $773 million cleanup trust fund established for the environmentally-safe clean-up and demolition of closed General Motor plants throughout the county. Fisker Automotive purchased the former General Motor plant last year and plans to use the old plant for production of new, environmentally friendly hybrids.
"Today’s announcement that Delaware will receive $11.7 million to help with the cost of cleaning up the closed General Motors plant in an environmentally responsible way is welcome news," said Sens. Carper and Kaufman. "For years the First State took pride in building some of the most trustworthy innovative cars in the world, and although General Motors is no longer building cars here, our proud manufacturing legacy in Delaware is far from over. Once the important first step of cleaning up the old GM plant is completed, new construction and eventually production can begin at Fisker Automotive, ushering in thousands of badly needed jobs for Delawareans. This Administration recognizes the positive impact Fisker and the automobile industry has in the First State and is serious about the potential this industry has to put our citizens back to work."
