Sen. Carper to Participate in Christiana Fire Company Press Conference
Christiana Fire Co. recipient of $245,682 grant for self contained breathing apparatus project
Wilmington, DE – Senator Tom Carper will participate in a press conference at the Christiana Fire Company, Station 12 on Monday, August 23, 2004. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security recently awarded the Christiana Fire Company a $245,682 grant to upgrade and replace the existing self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA). Each firefighter will have their own individually fitted face mask and each SCBA will have a built in light and sound alarm system, improving firefighter safety and protection. A high pressure air compressor necessary to refill the air bottles will also be installed. Christiana Fire Company provides fire suppression, rescue, basic life support, emergency medical services and public safety education for 100,000 residents covering 38 square miles in central New Castle County. The company has three stations, 100 active volunteers, employs one full time administrator and eleven full time Emergency Medical Technicians. In 2003, Christiana Fire Company responded to 8,914 alarms, placing it as the most active combination fire company in the state.
