Sen. Carper Announces Citizens’ Hose Fire Company to Receive $47,500 Grant from U.S. Department of Homeland Security

Federal Grant Provides Direct Assistance to Firefighters

Smyrna, DE – Citizens’ Hose Company No.1, Smyrna’s Volunteer Fire Company, is the recipient of a $47,500 federal grant from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Senator Tom Carper announced today. This grant is part of $650 million in grants distributed to fire departments throughout the U.S. as part of the Fiscal Year 2005 Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program (AFGP). The AFGP awards one-year grants directly to fire departments to support the nation’s firefighters and the services they provide. “I am incredibly pleased that Citizens’ Hose Company No. 1 in Smyrna received this funding,” said Senator Carper. “Delaware’s firefighters put their lives in jeopardy every day in an effort to keep families safe, and I know this grant will assist their mission and help keep them safe.” The fire company received this money through the “Operations and Firefighter Safety” program. The grant will go toward training, equipment, personal protective equipment, wellness and fitness, and modifications to fire stations and facilities. Senator Carper is a senior member of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, the Senate panel with jurisdiction over the fire service and our nation’s homeland security efforts.
