Prepare yourself for hurricane season

This month marks the start of summer – a time when Delawareans and folks from across the country flock to our state’s pristine beaches and outdoor spaces. As we prepare to enjoy everything that summer has to offer, we also have to remember that June 1 marks the beginning of hurricane season. Now is the time for Delawareans to prepare. As Hurricane Sandy taught us last fall, it’s vital that all of us know the threats associated with living in a coastal state and understand how to keep our families and homes safe if a hurricane hits. In the Senate, I have the privilege to chair the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, and through this role I’ve had the opportunity to meet and talk with first responders from FEMA, the National Guard, state and local law enforcement, the American Red Cross and more. One message I’ve heard over and over again is that proper preparation can help prevent serious damage to homes and property and can even save lives. Basically, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

In February, Sen. Carper visited the American Red Cross’ Digital Operations Center in Washington, DC, to see how new technology is being utilized to save lives.

One of the most important things you can do in advance of a hurricane is to think ahead and create emergency preparedness kits so that you and your family are ready for the threat of a storm, and you can visit FEMA’s emergency preparedness website to learn what to include in your kits. Another good idea is to use new mobile apps from the American Red Cross that track the progress of impending storms or natural disasters and also provide resources to help you and your family prepare and recover.
