Carper Statement on Approval of the Port of Wilmington Expansion

WILMINGTON, Del. – Today, U.S. Senator Tom Carper released the following statement after Delaware’s General Assembly approved the Port of Wilmington Expansion. In March, Senator Carper, ranking member of the Environment and Public Works Committee, hosted Assistant Secretary of the Army for Civil Works, R.D. James, in Delaware to view the activities the Army Corps of Engineers supports at the Port of Wilmington and to show how vital the Port of Wilmington is to our nation:

“Delaware’s Congressional Delegation, working with the Governor and Secretary of State, is laser-focused on ensuring the Port of Wilmington remains an economic driver for our region. The Port is one of America’s top seaports for fresh fruit imports, supporting thousands of jobs and millions of dollars in revenue every year. However, like much of the aging infrastructure in our country, it needs modernization. In 2013, with the support of our delegation, the Port won a competitive TIGER grant to make much-needed infrastructure improvements. Today, with the General Assembly’s approval of this Port expansion agreement, more improvements will be made. As the top Democrat on the Environment and Public Works Committee in the Senate, I will continue to work on legislation that improves the economic vitality of the Port of Wilmington and ensures that this source of revenue and good paying jobs remains a resource for our communities and our country.”
