Carper Statement on DHS DACA Announcement

WASHINGTON—Today, U.S. Senator Tom Carper (D-Del.) released the following on the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) announcement that it would continue the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.

“I applaud yesterday’s announcement that will keep 750,000 undocumented Dreamers, who were brought to this country as children, safe from deportation. These young men and women know no other home than the United States, and ensuring that they may come out of the shadows to live their lives and attend work and school is simply common sense. More important, it’s common decency. After months of uncertainty, I am glad to know that the Dreamers in my state and across the country now have the certainty they deserve.

“These impressive young men and women contribute to our economy and our communities. They are our neighbors and our friends. While I am glad the administration dropped its campaign promise to deport these young people, I remain deeply disappointed and concerned by many other aspects of President Trump’s immigration policy. I believe comprehensive immigration reform that is effective, humane, and fair is the only way to fix our broken system.”
