Carper Statement on Military Photo Scandal
WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Tom Carper (D-Del.), a retired Navy captain and former naval flight officer, released the following statement regarding reports that active duty and former members of the military have participated in a scheme to distribute explicit photos of female colleagues and other women without their consent.
“These reports are appalling and reprehensible, and this disturbing behavior has no place in the United States Armed Forces. The sharing of explicit photos without consent is a violation of the privacy we all deserve, and the mention of violence against these women should make us all shudder.
“I urge each branch of the military to conduct their investigations immediately, and expect each to produce thorough conclusions about what happened and how we can prevent this type of repugnant behavior in the future. I want to thank the brave whistleblowers who came forward with these deeply disturbing allegations, and hope others will follow their examples and cooperate fully with the military officials who are conducting this important investigation. We must get to the bottom of this scandal, protect and provide justice to the women who were impacted, and ensure that those involved in this despicable behavior receive the punishment they deserve.”
