Carper Statement on Trump Budget’s Blow to U.S. Economy
WASHINGTON—Today U.S. Senator Tom Carper (D-Del.) released the following statement on the devastating impacts President Trump’s budget proposal will have on our economy.
“I’ve long said that the role of government is create a nurturing environment for job creation and job growth. President Trump’s budget proposal would do just the opposite.
“Over the past eight years, we have made smart federal investments that helped our economy recover from the Great Recession, but President Trump’s proposed budget for the 2018 fiscal year would directly undermine that progress. As families and businesses work hard to continue our recovery from one of the most devastating financial crises in our nation’s history, this budget’s short-sighted cuts and misplaced investments would constrain economic growth and impede businesses’ ability to create good-paying jobs. At the same time, proposed cuts to health and social service programs will leave workers and families in dire straits with nowhere to turn.
“Make no mistake – the president’s proposal is not a workable budget plan. We have to do better, and I know we can. I ask my colleagues in Congress to come together in the spirit of bipartisanship to work together on a fiscally responsible budget plan that can deliver results for the American people.”
