Carper Statement on U.S. Airstrikes in Syria
WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Tom Carper (D-Del.) released the following statement today on the United States’ military action in Syria.
“The use of chemical weapons in Syria is unacceptable under any circumstance, and I believe the administration’s measured response was appropriate. I commend the skill and professionalism of the servicemen and women of the U.S. Navy who took action yesterday.
“I am pleased the president appears to have had a change of heart regarding his views toward the Assad regime. However, should the president decide to take further military action, it is imperative that the president develops a strategy and consults with Congress before implementing it. But, military action alone will not bring an end to this bloody civil war, and I strongly support working with our allies to pursue a diplomatic solution.
“Unfortunately this recent chemical attack is only the latest reminder that the people of Syria are suffering tremendously. We have an obligation to help them in any way that we can. We must uphold our commitment to keeping our doors open to refugees and providing a safe haven to Syrians fleeing the ongoing war raging in their country. Therefore, I encourage the Trump Administration to reconsider its cruel and shortsighted refugee policy.”
