Delaware Congressional Delegation Hosts Two Veterans Job Fairs in August

WILMINGTON, Del. – U.S. Sens. Tom Carper, Chris Coons and Rep. John Carney (all D-Del.) are hosting two job fairs for military veterans in August – the first on Monday, August 13, 2012, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Middletown Memorial Fire Hall, 27 West Green Street, Middletown, Del., and the second on Friday, August 24, 2012, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Milford High School, 1019 North Walnut Street, Milford, Del.

Earlier this year, the delegation held job fairs in all three of Delaware’s counties, matching hundreds of employers with those seeking jobs. Currently, there are approximately 857,000 unemployed veterans nation-wide. That is why Delaware’s Congressional Delegation is working toward reducing this number through outreach events like this job fair, which will include a resume and interview preparation workshop.

“Veterans and their families made sacrifices in order to serve our country and that’s why it’s so important to honor their sacrifice when they return home by making sure they have the opportunity to transition their skills to civilian life,” said Sen. Tom Carper, a 23-year veteran of the Navy. “I hope veterans seeking employment take advantage of this job fair to meet employers who are looking for a dedicated, hard-working and skilled labor force.”

“The men and women who serve in our armed forces come home with unique skills and tested leadership experience, bringing immense value to the employers who hire them,” Senator Coons said. “In talking with veterans, military leaders, business leaders, and government officials – as well as with business owners – it became clear that one of the best things we could do was simply to create opportunities for these employers to meet these talented Americans. I am pleased to partner with the Congressional delegation to put our veterans in the same room with employers ready to help them return to the civilian workforce.”

“Veterans have training and skills that translate directly to the workplace. They are proven leaders and excellent decision-makers who work well under pressure,” said Congressman Carney. “Next month’s job fair will connect veterans with organizations throughout the state that can benefit from these important skills. I encourage Delaware veterans to take advantage of this opportunity.”
