Finance Hearing Statement: “Healthcare.gov: A Review of Operations and Enrollment”

WASHINGTON – Today, Sen. Tom Carper (D-Del.) issued the following statement on the Senate Finance Committee’s hearing: “HealthCare.gov: A Review of Operations and Enrollment.”

“Before the Affordable Care Act (ACA), nearly 50 million Americans were uninsured, creating an unsustainable burden on our nation’s health care system and jeopardizing the health, wellbeing and financial safety of families. Since the passage of the ACA, 20 million Americans have gained health insurance coverage and health care costs are rising at their lowest rate in 50 years.

“Today, millions of Americans are enrolling in health insurance plans through the state and federal marketplaces, so we must be attentive to the security and efficiency of the sites they’re using. I look forward to hearing from the Office of the Inspector General and the Government Accountability Office (GAO) today about their review of HealthCare.gov operations, and to learning more about how we can strengthen enrollment efforts and provide access to health care to more Americans.

“The ACA is not a silver bullet to fix all the problems in our health care system, and the law is not written in stone. As with any piece of legislation, as we continue to implement the ACA, we should also work together to make it better. I’m hopeful that the committee’s attention to this issue will enable us begin finding more productive and sensible ways to improve the state and federal marketplaces for the millions of Americans who rely on them.”
