Old Dover Days Parade Smyrna-Clayton Little League Opening Ceremonies Commissioning Ceremony at Delaware Military Academy Dover, DE – Senator Carper will spend Saturday, May 1, 2004, celebrating history, tradition and fun in Kent County and leadership and citizenship in New Castle County. Senator Carper and members of his staff will take part in the Old Dover Days parade. The 71st annual Old Dover Days festival celebrates of the merriment and fun of spring with a parade through town, Maypole dancing and colonial and craft demonstrations on The Green in Dover. Hundreds of Delawareans from all over the state are expected. Senator Carper will then help The Smyrna-Clayton Little League in kicking off its 2004 season at the James T. Vaughn Sr. Little League Field. Senator Carper will join state and local officials in the opening ceremonies of this special occasion. Students at the Delaware Military Academy will participate in the charter school’s first commissioning ceremony. This Naval custom signifies the acceptance of a new ship in the active fleet of the United States Navy, in this particular case, a new charter school. This ceremony was originally scheduled for September, but postponed due to Hurricane Isabel. The Delaware Military Academy opened its doors to new cadets on September 2, 2003 with 310 students in grades 9 and 10. The Delaware Military Academy is the only Navy JRROTC military charter high school in the United States.
