Delegation Comments On Closure Of Valero Plant
WILMINGTON – Delaware’s Congressional delegation, Sens. Tom Carper and Ted Kaufman (both D-Del.) and Rep. Mike Castle (R-Del.) issued the following statement today in response to the announcement that Valero will be closing its plant in Delaware City:
“We are deeply saddened to learn that Valero is leaving Delaware, and 550 hard-working employees, behind.
“Valero has stated that it intends to immediately begin negotiations with the refinery’s unions, and we are anxious to see ample severance provided to help the affected families.
“Today’s announcement is the latest reminder of our tough economic times, and it has never been more important to work together to create new economic opportunities in Delaware.
“We stand ready to work with Governor Markell and his administration to provide whatever assistance might be available for the workers from the federal government.”
