Senator Carper Touts Delaware’s Tax-Free Shopping as an Important Component of Economy
WASHINGTON, DC -While other states celebrate back-to-school with tax-free holidays, Delaware has been delivering consumer savings for years. Highlighting Delaware as a model for the nation, Senator Tom Carper touted its year-round tax-free shopping. An important part of the state’s economy, tax-free retail shopping pumps extra revenue into businesses and puts money back in the pockets of hard working Delawareans. “People are working harder. They should be able to get the most for their money,” Carper said. “Delaware lets their shopping dollars go further.” As families prepare for back-to-school by hitting the stores, many states are finding that their tax-free holiday weekends are popular with consumers. But Delaware proves that its innovative approach to a retail sales tax, one that is not merely done on a promotional basis, works. “Retail shopping is an important component of Delaware’s economy, especially our tourist economy,” Carper said. “Hundreds of thousands of tourists come to our state every year, and they shop at outlets from the beaches in Sussex County, to those along the Christina Riverfront. They come to enjoy the sights, and they bring their credit cards with them, and take advantage of our tax-free shopping.”
