Carper Calls for Immediate Action on Bankruptcy Reform

WASHINGTON, DC – Senator Tom Carper (D-DE) joined a bipartisan group of Senators today to urge the U.S. House of Representatives to bring up the bankruptcy reform conference report for a final vote before Congress adjourns this October. Broad bipartisan support for the measure in the Senate should ensure the reform efforts become law once it is passed in the House, Carper said. “The fight for bankruptcy reform has come too far to stop short right now. There’s broad support for this measure in the Senate. The Members of Congress that I’ve spoken with say the bill will pass in the House if it is allowed to come up for a vote,” Carper said. “The House has the papers and the ball is in their court. They can pass this bill soon and they should. Once they do, the Senate stands ready to pass it here as well,” Carper said. Carper joined Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle (D-SD), Senate Majority Whip Harry Reid (D-NV), Senator Chuck Grassley (R-IA) the Ranking Member of the Senate Finance Committee, and Senator Orrin Hatch (R-UT), the Ranking Member of the Senate Judiciary Committee in a show of bipartisan support. “The bankruptcy reform act injects a measure of fairness into the current law. It reduces credit abuse by ensuring those who can repay a portion of their debts, do. But it also protects struggling families who require a fresh start,” Carper said. “It protects single parents and their children by demanding that support payments and alimony not only continue but come first.”
