Senator Carper Reacts to Department of Energy’s Announcement to Invest $750,000 in University of Delaware’s Offshore Wind Development
WASHINGTON – Today Sen. Tom Carper (D-Del.) released the following statement reacting to the Department of Energy’s (DOE) announcement that it will invest $750,000 in the University of Delaware’s offshore wind development, specifically for the research and development of corrosion protection, gearbox reliability, and tower structures in shallow offshore waters. The University of Delaware was one of 16 institutions selected by DOE to receive part of $3 million to support wind energy research and development off America’s shores.
"I am encouraged by today’s announcement that University of Delaware is receiving more funding for their incredible work on off-shore wind. I have supported this project and will continue to support wind projects in Delaware. Just last Friday I joined the University’s wind experts – Drs. Nancy Targett, Willett Kempton and Jeremy Firestone – at their Lewes campus to see, first-hand, their new turbine. We got to tour the site, learn about the impact of the turbine, and really be a part of making history. Getting to see the work being done and the turbine up-close solidifies my knowledge that University of Delaware is leading the charge on wind power. Many are talking about harnessing the great potential of offshore wind energy but the University of Delaware is actually doing it," said Sen. Carper.
