Delaware Students Headed to Washington, DC get an Orientation from their Hometown Senator

DOVER, DE – John Cordrey and Mara Seidel will get a glimpse into the inner workings of government tomorrow afternoon when they are met by Senator Carper for an exclusive orientation in Dover. Both students won United States Senate Youth Scholarships, entitling them to money for college and a week in the nation’s capitol in preparation for their studies. Before heading to Washington, DC to represent Delaware at the national conference, Carper and select staffers will brief the pair on the role of government and the day-to-day workings of the nation’s capitol. “I am proud of John and Mara, as are their teachers and parents. That they have come so far in this competitive process speaks to what they are capable of accomplishing in the future,” Carper said. “Our meeting will be a chance for both John and Mara to brush up on the issues, the legislative process and the lingo. And I hope it will provide both students with the special kind of insight being from our small state can provide.” Both Cordrey and Seidel will be busy during their trip. In addition to visiting with Delaware’s delegation, they will visit the U.S. Senate, the House of Representatives, the Supreme Court and the Pentagon, and sit in on policy addresses from some of the county’s leading officials. Cordrey and Seidel join a select group of award winners that include just two students from each state, the District of Columbia and the Department of Defense. Before becoming one of ten state finalists, each was selected by their high school. In addition to recommendations, both student leaders were extensively tested and interviewed.
