On Veterans Day, Sen. Carper Reflects on Military Service
WASHINGTON – On Veterans Day, Sen. Tom Carper (D-Del.) – a retired captain in the U.S. Navy who served three tours of duty in Southeast Asia – reflects on his own experiences as a veteran and the contributions of servicemembers across the country in this month’s “Carper’s Corner” video blog post.
“It’s pretty easy to recognize or identify somebody in uniform, to know that they’re serving on active duty or as reservists or as a member of the Guard,” Sen. Carper says. “It’s a lot harder to know somebody who’s served before, whether it was in World War II or Korea, Vietnam or the Persian Gulf War. When you find out that someone has served, make a special point of thanking them … Take advantage of those opportunities, and just say to all of them, ‘Welcome home. We’re proud of you, and we’re grateful for your service.’ ”
