Sen. Carper Statement on MOEX Offshore/Mitsui Settlement with BP

WASHINGTON – Today, Sen. Tom Carper (D-Del.), Chairman of the Subcommittee on Federal Financial Management, Government Information, Federal Services, and International Security, released the following statement on BP’s announcement of the reached settlement with MOEX Offshore/Mitsui to settle all claims between the two companies related to the BP/Deepwater Horizon accident:

“I have made clear from the beginning that the American taxpayer shouldn’t be on the hook for the costs related to the BP/Deepwater Horizon oil spill. Over a year later residents of the Gulf are still dealing with the impact of the spill and it will likely be years until they are fully recovered. In hearings my subcommittee held last year, I called on all of the parties involved in the Macondo well to make sure that the spill was cleaned up, that residents and businesses were made whole, and that the American people weren’t left responsible for the cost associated with this disaster.

“MOEX Offshore, as a minority owner in the well, has recognized their shared responsibility under the law and I am pleased to see that their settlement with BP will immediately go towards paying for the federal government’s response efforts as well as individual and business claims. My subcommittee and I will continue to make sure that not one dime of taxpayer money is spent related to this spill, and I look forward to putting one of the greatest environmental disasters in our nation’s history behind us.”
