Senator Carper Statement Following Passage of Critical National Security Bill

Today, U.S. Senator Tom Carper (D-Del.) released the following statement after the U.S. Senate voted to provide aid to our allies and partners around the world. After months of Senate Republicans stalling the vote, the final legislation includes support for Ukraine, Israel, the Indo-Pacific, humanitarian aid for Gaza, and more, and passed on the Senate floor with a vote of 70-29.

“Today, we finally passed legislation that enhances our national security and provides urgently needed aid to our allies and partners around the world. With this vote, we are saying loud and clear that our most dangerous adversaries, including Russia and China, have no place threatening sovereign nations and democracy at large. And the American people can rest assured that we have taken necessary action to protect our own national security.

“The road to passing this bill was drawn out for no good reason. After demands from Congressional Republicans to address the issues at our nation’s southern border, Senators James Lankford (R-Okla.), Chris Murphy (D-Conn.), and Krysten Sinema (I-Ariz.) spent months hammering out the strongest set of reforms to border security policy in decades. It’s disappointing that Senate Republicans decided to completely reverse course at former President Trump’s insistence and oppose the very legislation they requested.

“In the end, we passed a bill that we can all be proud of, and I urge my colleagues in the House to swiftly pass this legislation to strengthen our national security, the national security of our allies, and the very security of western democracy.”
