Senator Carper Statement on Verdict in Senator Menendez’s Trial

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Senator Tom Carper (D-Del.) released the following statement regarding the verdict of Senator Robert Menendez’s (D-N.J.) trial:

“Ten months ago, when the charges against Senator Menendez were brought by the United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York, I shared with him the famous words of American singer-songwriter, Kenny Rogers: ‘You’ve got to know when to hold ‘em, and know when to fold ‘em.’ At the time, I urged him to ‘fold ‘em’ and face the music, but he chose not to do so and exercised his constitutional right to defend himself in a court of law.

“Today is a sad day for the people of New Jersey and a sad day for those of us who have served with Senator Menendez, but the jury has spoken and the ruling of the court must be respected. I find no joy in this outcome, and as I said last fall, it is time for Senator Menendez to ‘fold ‘em’ and resign.”
