Veterans come to Middletown for Job Fair

MIDDLETOWN, Del. – Nearly 100 veterans came to Middletown to meet with employers at a job fair for veterans hosted by Delaware’s Congressional Delegation of Sens. Tom Carper, Chris Coons and Congressman John Carney (all D-Del.).

Forty employers and organizations offering services and resources to veterans were on hand. Like previous job fairs held by the delegation, the Department of Labor held resume-building workshops which gave veterans the tools they need to develop an attractive resume for prospective employers.

“It was helpful to talk to the veterans who came out today about their job prospects and what we can do to help them find work,” said Sen. Carper, a member of the Senate Veterans Job Caucus. “As a 23-year veteran of the Navy, I know firsthand the sacrifices they made defending our nation. We have a responsibility to ensure that our returning heroes have the resources and opportunities to support themselves and their families when they come home.”

“We are a stronger and more prosperous nation with veterans in our workforce, just as their service makes us safer and more secure,” Senator Coons said. “Too many of our service men and women experience roadblocks when they transition to civilian life and employment, and we are all worse off for it. Job fairs like today’s and the one we hosted earlier this month in Bridgeville play a critical role easing that transition by connecting veterans with the resources they need. I will continue to do everything I can to ensure that Delaware’s veterans have the tools they need to succeed when they arrive home.”

“Delaware’s veterans have the experience, skills, and training that many of our employers are looking for,” said Congressman Carney. “I’m glad that so many of them came to today’s job fair and met employers that can help them begin the next phase of their careers. That’s our goal in hosting these events, and we’ll continue looking for opportunities to connect Delaware job seekers with employers in our community.”

In 2012, the Delegation hosted four general job fairs and two veterans’ job fairs with a combined total of more than 5,000 people taking advantage of the opportunities to meet employers and develop resume and interview skills.
